David and Christine Griffiths (2011)
David was educated at the University of Auckland where he graduated M.Mus in 1973. Following this, he travelled to England for further study and sang both as a soloist and singer in a number of groups.Upon his return to NZ he won the NZ Herald Aria competition and the 1983 Mobil Song Quest and has performed with major choral societies and NZ Opera. David has a significant repertoire of opera and oratorio which he has performed both in NZ and internationally. He has also had success with his recent operatic compositions. David is senior lecturer in vocal studies at the University of Waikato.
Christine Griffiths studied piano at Auckland University with Janetta McStay and Brian Sayer. She is well known throughout NZ as an accompanist and has performed in all major centres. Her long partnership with David has included recitals in Taiwan, China and USA. She and David are keen supporters of NZ music with recent recitals including songs by Farquhar, Lilburn, Marshall and David's own compositions. Christine is a national recording artist for Radio NZ and has a teaching studio in Hamilton.
The duo will perform Die Schöne Müllerin, a song cycle by Schubert based on poems by Wilhelm Müller. This consists of twenty songs and is considered to be one of his most important works.
